Weekend coffee #82.
I’m having one of those Home Alone weeks, where you think you double checked everything but know you’re overlooking something. Because as much as summer enchants me, it’s also a huge distraction when you’re up against deadline after deadline. And at the same time, when someone said to me last week “I thought you were a teacher,” I balked, borderline offended at the thought. Nothing against teachers, I just don’t have that in me. I prefer the stress and pressure of dealing with adults over children and teenagers any day. Snark aside, this turned out to be a week of long reads and a little light nostalgia. Here’s what that looked like:
The Crane Wife. I, along with much of the internet, found this piece speaking directly to me and my relationships - some past, some present. Being a human isn’t always easy, and that’s made even more complicated by interacting with others, making the last line of the piece genuinely gutting.
I’m bummed about the end of Topic Magazine this month. They’ve produced some of the best content I’ve read in years and every time a site like this shuts down; I mourn the loss pretty hard. Having grown up with the intent of becoming a journalist, and now being a writer in a different capacity, I have the utmost respect for those who do that work.
The Man with the Golden Airline Ticket. Another long article that’s worth your time. I can’t imagine having that type of freedom taken from you (and yes, I know it was a luxury to have it in the first place). But still, when you’re that committed to one thing, one brand, one airline, it’s consuming.
I used to jump all over those stupid viral apps, mostly for Instagram fodder. But with the rise of AI, facial recognition, and well, surveillance capitalism, I’ve started hesitating. Beyond the fact that I don’t want to look old, I’m not convinced the technology is there yet. Read more.
Went to see the Jimmy Eat World and Third Eye Blind tour like a week ago but left halfway through Jimmy Eat World. Now, I wish I stayed for Third Eye Blind (who I like better anyway). Haven’t followed what they’re up to lately but was reminded of this cover.
