Weekend coffee #102.
I think I’m finally in the holiday spirit. I did a little light pre-birthday shopping yesterday and picked up some peppermint bark (pictured above). On the way home, I caught myself singing along with some familiar tunes before sitting down and inhaling deeply in front of my tree. There are, of course, still a few more things to do like mail out cards, wrap gifts and watch movies, including Moonstruck because one, Danny Aiello, and two, in my book it’s a Christmas movie. Don’t @ me on that last one. Otherwise, here’s what I’m thinking about this week:
100% her year: How Lizzo became the one thing we all loved in 2019. I saw a journalist query a few days ago asking why Lizzo became so popular as if she didn’t work her ass off to get to this place. Like, let’s just enjoy her music, alright?
Watch: The Idea, a short film that seeks to answer the question, "Can you visualize the frustrations of the creative process? It seems like you definitely can, at least from the perspective of this writer.
Another short film: The Bird and the Whale. Just as a warning, you might ugly cry with this one, between the animation, score, and overall narrative. It’s ridiculously beautiful and a bit of a tear-jerker to boot.
If you need a laugh after that one, might I recommend, “My Husband Left Me on the Side of the Road.” You’ll need to stick with this one until the end to find out why. I wasn’t sure about the piece at first, but trust me.
In memoriam: The brands we lost in the 2010s. I try to shop in stores whenever and wherever possible, and it’s a huge pet peeve of mine when I hear, “Sorry, we don’t have that item, but we can order it off our website.”
And while we’re on the topic of things we’ve lost these last ten years, how about blogging? The New York Times offers a farewell to Feministing, and while I back this piece, I’d also like to bring back the heyday of blogs in general.
