I’ll be honest, some weeks I write this post on Friday afternoon, taking a little time to myself to read through the links I put aside for the week. This week, I’m coming at you live from my office on a Saturday morning, at dawn, with a giant mug of coffee and an ebbieoche from Sift Bake Shop. You be wondering how that’s possible since I live in New Jersey, not Connecticut, and the answer is: yesterday, I drove 7+ hours to and from Mystic to have lunch with my grandmother. While there, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to drop in on one of the more delicious bakeries I’ve found on the East Coast. So in honor this true weekend coffee, here’s what I’ve been reading:
Kobe Bryant and Complicated Legacies - I’m not a sports fan, so the public reaction to Kobe’s passing surprised me. I also have a long memory and immediately thought about what had happened in 2003. I’m not saying this to diminish his accomplishments, merely to point out that I agree with the author that we have to tell the whole truth - in life and death.
Dahlia Lithwick and Moira Donegan: What Happens When Women Tell the Truth - On a related note, I thought this was another very important conversation about truth-telling, particularly the part towards the end about suffering. We never seem to consider the consequences of lying, focusing instead on the act of lying instead - how does this encourage suffering?
Whatever Happened to _________? - CW: abuse. There appears to be a theme emerging from this week’s links, and honesty is at the heart of the conversation, right alongside gender. There are other layers to this piece, about the roles we play and how assuming new identities alters how others perceive us.
What I Learned About Life at a Company That Deals in Dead Bodies - Besides the toxic workplace culture, the work didn’t sound much easier. “Pathologically empathetic, I thought of the donor families and co-workers that I was abandoning.” An important reminder that our work doesn’t necessarily define us and that we shouldn’t let it.
10 Life-Changing Moments That Happened Since My Cancer Went Into Remission - OK, onto an uplifting perspective on a tough situation. I know around New Year’s a lot of people thought back on the previous decade, posting snapshots and the like, but what about those periods in life by personal experiences?
