Weekend coffee #113.
Hi there, I’m writing this as I wrap up my week and gear up for a quick vacation. What to pack, what to pack. We’re only gone five nights so I don’t want to overdo it, though I’m pretty sure all I really need is a bathing suit. In the meantime, I’ve had about a hundred conversations about coronavirus this week, and while the possibility is scary, we’re still traveling. There are no reported cases where we’re going and I’ve picked up Clorox wipes and other essentials for the plane. Bases covered. Otherwise, here’s what I’m thinking about and reading this week:
The Cynthia Nixon promo for Girls. Girls. Girls. Magazine. I’m not quite sure how I feel about this one. On the one hand, absolutely everything she says is true, though it’s difficult to watch it roll out like that. On the other hand, it’s a slick marketing promotion designed to go viral and that cheapens the intended effect.
Replaying My Shame. Thirteen years later, the author writes, what happened at Gawker isn’t going away. I think there’s a certain naivety that comes with being early in your career, one that often manifests in bold choices and brash actions. At the same time, certain traumas take a long time to unpack and it seems that’s what happened here.
I Tried Making Mike Bloomberg’s Meatball Recipe and It Doesn’t Make Sense. Geraldine DeRuiter is a national treasure as far as I’m concerned, and like her award-winning cinnamon rolls essay, she hit the nail on the head. Bloomberg is just (D)iet Trump and definitely not worthy of the nomination.
Hi From Your Childless Friend. I don’t have kids. I don’t plan on having kids. That’s not because I don’t like kids, they’re just not something I see as part of my life. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want to be part of my friends with kids’ lives. It’s a tough bridge to gap and one that requires both sides to reach out and engage.
As the Start-Up Boom Deflates, Tech Is Humbled. I recently listened to the WeCrashed podcast and frankly, it’s starting to feel like the dot-com bubble all over again. Or at least, the start of the Great Recession. Too much money invested in too many ideas for things people don’t want or need.
