Weekend coffee #112.
After the year that was January, it's sort of crazy that February is almost over. Today, I'm getting ready for a Mardi Gras second line and party through a nearby town and gearing up to see a movie tomorrow. And this time next week, it's time to get out of town. I'm very ready for that at this point. As a true beach baby, I need sun, sand and saltwater, though I'm a little concerned that once we get back, winter will actually show up. You just never know anymore, and March seems to be the new January. Fingers crossed. Otherwise, here's what I'm reading this week:
Millennials Show Loyalty to Employers. My friend, Laura, is quoted in this piece, and I point it out because it's a topic we've talked about a lot together. I'm not sure it's clear what an amazing tenure looks like, but I think it's safe to say that a good number of the Millennial tropes are proving untrue.
There's a psychological reason for why you need to tell everyone how cheap your clothes are. I'm definitely guilty of deflecting compliments, but I'm also genuinely interested in learning where people bought something and how much they paid (so I can potentially buy it for myself!).
The pungent legacy of Axe Body Spray. Ugh, I had an ex who used Axe Body Spray, and I swear the smell lingers in my memory. The same goes for Cool Water by Davidoff. Now and again, I get a whiff, and it's right back to the 1990s, and not in a good way.
The Great Google Revolt. I've written about this story before and continue to follow it pretty closely. While Google feels like an inescapable part of life nowadays, I think it's important to know what's going on inside the company and how they're treating workers (and ex-workers).
The Farewell is streaming. I watched The Farewell last weekend and really liked it. I was particularly struck by the cupping scene and how little context is given for the treatment. It reminded me of feeling stuck at points in my life. It's a tough movie though there are some bright spots.
